Standard boudoir is about how you look. Conceptual boudoir is about who you are.

The difference is the starting point. In a traditional session, we start with wardrobe: What are you wearing? What sets match the vibe? In a conceptual session, we start with a question: What’s the story?

Maybe you’re a competitive powerlifter and you want to be photographed in your chalk and wraps with the same intensity you bring to the platform. Maybe you’re a painter and you want to be covered in your own medium — literal paint on skin, your studio as the backdrop. Maybe you’re a chef and you want the kitchen set with flour dust in the air and your hands doing what they do. Maybe you just finished chemo and you want to document the body that survived it, on your terms, with the scars visible and the lighting deliberate.

None of that requires lingerie. All of it is boudoir because boudoir, at its core, isn’t a wardrobe category. It’s a way of being photographed that says I was here, I looked like this, and I chose how you saw me.

October is the best possible month to try creative conceptual boudoir for the first time, and here’s why: Halloween gives you permission.

The rest of the year, the idea of showing up to a photo shoot in character feels like a big swing. In October, it’s standard practice. You already know who you want to be. The dark femme fatale. The vintage Hollywood starlet. The foxy villain from the show you’ve watched ten times. The witch — not the party store version, the real one: herbs, candles, earth tones, magical power.

The difference between a Halloween boudoir session and putting on a costume is the same as the difference between a selfie and a portrait. One is a snapshot. The other is built with lighting, set design, wardrobe, mood, professional hair and makeup, and a photographer who’s directing every frame. When we shoot a dark editorial session in October, we’re not adding spider webs to lingerie. We’re building a cinematic frame around a version of you that doesn’t usually get to exist out loud.

Ideas to Get You Started

(That Aren’t Just “Wear Black Lingerie”)

If you’re stuck on what a conceptual session could look like, here are some directions our clients have taken and some we’d love to build for the right person:

The Athlete. Boxing gloves, lifting chalk, dance shoes, flowing fabric, sweat, martial arts gear. Your sport, your body, your terms. This is fitness photography meets boudoir, and nobody else in Atlanta is doing it.

The Artist. Paint on skin, brushes in hand, your creative medium as wardrobe. Musicians, writers, sculptors: bring the thing that makes you lose track of time.

Vintage Hollywood. Old glamour, victory rolls, satin gloves, cigarette holders (unlit), pin-up attire. Think Bettie Page, Marilyn Monroe, Eartha Kitt. The closet at our studio has pieces that work perfectly for this, but please do bring anything you have!

Dark Editorial/Gothic. Moody lighting, dramatic shadows, deep shades of red and purple. Perfect for October, but gorgeous any month. This is the session for the woman who’s tired of bright, airy, Pinterest-clean everything. Few are bold enough to do black lipstick and cat eyes, but I’m here for it if you are!

The Bookworm. Surrounded by your actual books and any of the antique novels from our library set, reading in lingerie or a Hollywood style robe, channeling a character from the novel that changed your life. The BookTok-to-boudoir pipeline is real and we are here for it.

Cultural Heritage. Fabrics (kente cloth, saris, kilts, Huipil), jewelry (Maasai beadwork, Jhumka earrings, Native American turquoise & silver) and elements from your culture, styled with intention. This is one of the most powerful conceptual sessions we do because it photographs identity, not just beauty.

The Survivor. Post-surgery, post-treatment, post-whatever-tried-to-take-your-bodyfrom-you. Scars visible, lighting deliberate, your story told on your terms. This isn’t a themed session. It’s a document of your survival story.

How a Conceptual Session Works

The mechanics are the same as a standard boudoir session — professional hair and makeup, guided posing, same-day reveal. What changes is the front end.

Your consultation becomes a creative planning session. We talk about the concept, the mood, the references. We figure out what you’re bringing, what we’re providing from the studio, and what we need to source. We match you with the set designs that fit the vision. If your concept needs something we don’t have, we build it or we find it.

Most clients combine conceptual looks with traditional boudoir looks in the same session. You’ll typically shoot four looks total — maybe two conceptual and two classic, or three and one, or all four conceptual if you’re going all in. The mix is yours to decide.

Session retainers and collections work the same way they do for any session, including payment plan options. A conceptual session doesn’t cost more just because the concept is bigger. We just want the idea.
